Description
**ONE OF ONLY 200+ LIMITED EDITION COPIES** "A SERMON" BY ROBERT FROST New York: The Spiral Press, 1947.  LIMITED EDITION / First Edition [Crane A33].  Gray-red wove paper wrappers lettered in dark gray on a gray paper label within a blind-stamped panel on the front cover: "A SERMON BY ROBERT FROST."  5 1/4" by 8 1/8".  20 pages.  Titled: "A SERMON BY ROBERT FROST SPOKEN ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES AT THE ROCKDALE AVENUE TEMPLE / CENCINNATI, OHIO, THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 10,1946."  Rabbi Dr. Victor E. Reichert and his family spent their summers in Ripton, Vermont, where he became friends with Robert Frost who lived in a Cabin on a nearby Farm he owned, and who spent his summers teaching at the nearby Middlebury College Bread Loaf School of English.  While visiting Victor Reichert at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, Robert Frost made an unplanned address to the congregation of the Rockdale Avenue Temple where Reichert was the Rabbi.  Robert Frost's address was recorded, and a transcript of the recording was made by Dr. Reichert and published, although Robert Frost did not authorize the publication. According to the Colophon: "Five hundred copies of this Sermon have been printed for Dr. Victor E. Reichert in October, 1947 at The Spiral Press, New York."  According to Joseph Blumenthal, the owner/operator of The Spiral Press, the five hundred copies were to be distributed with 200 copies to Reichert and 200 copies to Frost, with Blumenthal keeping the remaining 100 copies for printing the brochure.  Because Frost was afraid that a close personal friend of his would take offense at something Frost had said in his address, the Poet asked that the publication be suppressed.  Since there is no evidence that Robert Frost distributed any of his 200 copies, he apparently destroyed all of them.  And after quietly distributing just a few copies to friends, Joseph Blumenthal wrote that the rest of his 100 copies were lost and probably discarded when The Spiral Press moved to new quarters.  Likewise, Victor Reichert also stated that over the years, he quietly and privately distributed all 200 of his copies to family, friends, members of his congregation, and Robert Frost collectors.  Thus, this copy is one of only about 200 or so remaining copies. This Copy also contains the correction of an error in transcription on the last page of Frost's Address.  On the second line, Reichert had erroneously transcribed Frost's words to be "That's his worry" instead of the correct "That's his mercy."  Accordingly, the word "worry" has been crossed out and the word "mercy" has been written in above it in black ink.  Fine Limited Edition Copy in beautifully printed wraps by The Spiral Press of a very rare Crane "A" item.   Additional pictures are available upon request.   Buyer pays $4.00 Media Mail  OR  $7.50 Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation in the U.S.  Insurance optional but highly recommended.  Foreign buyers should contact me before buying.
