Description
A lovely Deluxe Limited Edition Mother Goose, with the most charming illustrations by Arthur Rackham. This is one of the 1100 copies only printed and offered for sale in 1911, first limited signed edition. ( Another 30 copies were reserved for presentation).. Text on English Hand Made Paper .Chromolithographic quality illustrations, separately printed and tipped-in. Importantly, not only is this book illustrated by Arthur Rackham, but it was also compiled by him. The below is a small excerpt from the foreword. A lovely book! "..There are many more Nursery Rhymes than are included in this book, though I think most of the best known are here. I have chosen those I knew and liked best in my own nursery days...." A.R. Book: Mother Goose - The Old Nursery Rhymes. Compiled and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. One of a limited edition of 1100 copies, signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page. Publisher: William Heinemann Ltd, London, 1913. Full colour frontis and other tipped-in illustrations, and numerous black and white drawings, silhouettes and vignettes by Arthur Rackham, on each and every page ! Profusely illustrated and decorated, a most lovingly produced book. The text and black and white illustrations are on English hand-made paper, which is textured, similar to Arches or Fabriano. Good size quarto. The book is in modern/recent binding of rich chocolate-brown leather, with a gilt vignette and titles on the cover and gilt decorations on the spine, reproducing the original binding of white cloth. Top edge gilt, others uncut. New endpapers. Book condition: An excellent copy. The exterior is in excellent condition as shown. Slight smudge over the "u" in Arthur, otherwise, no issues. A lovely binding leather binding, the original binding of this book is of similar design but only in buckram. A leather binding is more valuable.Gilt very bright. Gilt edge also very good. Internally, very good. Inavoidable age browning to half-title, slightly to the limitation page and to index pages at the end. One text page with an old closed tear about 3" from bottom edge, not affecting text ( shown in photographs). A few of the tissue guards with slight wrinkling, a couple with some pale spotting and small tears, some of the spotting of tissues has transferred to the adjacent pages, however, text overall very bright and clean as we hope the photographs will show. The deep black inks also transferred to adjacent pages as is typical with the Rackham limited editions printed on porous hand-made English paper. Collated and complete, all plates in fine condition, all tissues present. No bookplates or inscriptions. Overall a lovely copy! The index at the end includes the first line from each Rhyme - so that you can find your own favorites and some new Rhymes also! Good luck bidding! Enjoy your win!
