Description
Estate of Iran's "sad queen" Soraya at auction in Paris 5/29-5/31 2002     PARIS, May 24 (AFP) - A platinum ring with a 22.37-carat diamond, designer suits, silverware and a Rolls Royce are just a few of the items belonging to a former Iranian princess that will be up for sale in Paris next week. Soraya Esfandiary Bakhtiari, the late shah of Iran's second wife who became known as the "sad queen" after he divorced her for failing to produce an heir, died in Paris in October at the age of 69. Her estate, valued at more than three million euros (2.75 million dollars), will be sold at the Drouot-Montaigne auction house over three days starting Wednesday, according to sale organizers Beaussant-Lefevre. The Harry Winston diamond ring -- part of the first auction session of fine jewelry on Wednesday night -- is expected to sell for 400,000-500,000 euros. Other items on offer include silverware, watches, dresses, designer suits, Christian Dior furs, photographs, artworks and a Rolls Royce Silver Spur -- the last item up for bids. Part of the collection will be on public display on Saturday and Sunday, with the full catalogue of offerings on view Tuesday and Wednesday before the start of the sale. Born in 1932 in Isfahan to a German mother and a father from Iran's powerful Bakhtiar tribe, Soraya was educated at a missionary school in Iran and then sent to finishing school in Switzerland. In 1949, the shah divorced his first wife Fawzieh -- sister of King Faruq of Egypt -- after she had given birth to a daughter but no sons. He married Soraya in 1951 but rejected her six years later after she failed to have any children. They divorced in 1958. The princess lived the rest of her life in exile in Europe, splitting her time between Italy, Germany and France. The shah, Mohammad Reza-Pahlavi, was forced from power by the Islamic revolution in 1979 and died a year later in Egypt. CATALOG CONSIST OF 339 PAGES. 942 LOTS ILLUSTRATED IN COLOR.
