A wonderful book for any child or adult or for a collector of Golden Age Illustrated works. This copy is signed and numbered by this superb artist, W.Heath Robinson, on the limitation page. Published by Constable & Company in London, no date but circa 1913 - nearly 100 years ago! A very beautiful edition of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved, magical fairy tales, profusely illustrated with 16 full colour lithographic tipped-in plates and very numerous, frequent black-and-white drawings, approximately 94 in number. Such frequent illustrations make this a tremendously entertaining work. This volume in fine quality full leather gilt binding, gilt-labelled spine, tooled leather on the spine, very decorative Florentine marbled paper end papers and further tooled gold-work inside the covers on the pastedowns. A most beautiful binding.  The text on superb quality hand-made paper, similar to Arches or Fabriano. The colour plates are protected by captioned tissues. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Thick and impressive large quarto volume. The watercolour illustrations by W.H.Robinson are sensitive, imaginative and original, as are the humourous finely detailed black and white drawings. Book Condition: An exceptional copy. Very near FINE externally and internally. Some light typical transferring of deep black illustrations to adjacent pages. This is inavoidable and occurs on most early Golden Age illustrated limited editions which are printed on porous art paper. Slight cutting error at margin of a contents page. No bookplates or inscriptions.
