Description
1553-1572 FOUR VOLUMES Bound in One. Small format, 4 1/2" x 6 1/4" Vellum 1) Janus PANNONIUS. Quinqueecclesiensis episcopi, antiquis vatibus comparandi, Ad Guarinum Veronensem Panegyricus. Eiusdem Elegiarum liber. Et Epigrammatum Sylvula. Item Lazari Bonanici Carmina nonnulla. Venetiis, Apud Gualterum Scottum. MDLIII (1553) Early Janus edition, based on the editions by Beatus Rhenanus and Adrianus Volphardus. 286 pages + errata page. TEXT IN LATIN. Janus Pannonius (Hungarian: János Csezmicei or Kesencei, Croatian: Ivan Cesmicki) (1434-1472) was a Croatian-Hungarian humanist, latinist poet, diplomat and Bishop of Pécs. He was the only truly significant poet of the Renaissance in the Kingdom of Hungary and one of the better-known figures of Humanist poetry in Europe. He was born in a small village near the Drava river in a corner of Slavonia. Janus’s father was a Croatian nobleman, but little is known about his family background. His mother, Borbála Vitéz, was the sister of Archbishop Vitéz. Pannonius was brought up by his mother; then in 1447 his uncle sent him to Italy for a humanist schooling. He attended the School of Guarino da Verona at Ferrara where the pupils were educated in Latin and Greek authors under the guidance of a noted teacher of the Italian Renaissance. The young boy was considered the brightest pupil of his generation by both his teachers and fellow-students. He soon revealed his ability to write poetry according to the rules of classical prosody; he was around thirteen when he wrote his first epigrams. His higher education was completed at the University of Padua in canon law, and after making an educational tour of Rome, he returned to the Kingdom of Hungary in 1458, the year of Matthias’s accession to the throne. For a time, he worked at the Royal Chancery, and soon became the Bishop of Pécs and later Vice-Chancellor of the country. Janus Pannonius was thus an influential intellectual in the kingdom, and one who never severed his connections with some of the leading humanists of his time. 2) Bernardo Mollero. (Bernard MOLLER). Rhenus, et ejus Descriptio elegans à primis fontibus usque ad Oceanum Germanicum... Autore D. Bernardo Mollero Monasteriensi. Coloniae, Apud Joannem Birckemannum, Anno 1570. (24) + 320 pages. TEXT IN LATIN. 3) Sebastiani SCHEFFERI ALDENBERGENSIS. (Sebastian SCHEFFER) POEMATA. Eorum Catalogus pagina sequente apparet. Francofurti Ad Moenum, Anno M. D. LXXII (1572). (24) + (446) pages + errata. TEXT IN LATIN. 4) Sebastiano SCHEFFERO ALDENBERGENSE. PROCESSUS IURIS BREVISSIMIS VERSIBUSREDDITUS. Francofurti Ad Moenum, per Nicolaum Bassee. M. D. LXXII (1572). (30) pages. TEXT IN LATIN. Four volumes/parts bound in an early vellum binding which has blind stamped "ISZM 1594" on front cover and handwritten titles on spine. I assume that 1594 was when these 4 volumes were bound into this one book. I could not find any of these 4 titles currently for sale on the net. A UNIQUE copy and RARE thus! PROVENANCE: A local estate collection which contains a good number of 16th-19th century books, mainly on European History, built up from the 1950's to recent times. This copy was last purchased in 1976 from a European bookseller. CONDITION: There is a 1" x 11/2" piece clipped off the title page of the PANNONIUS volume affecting the word "Scottum" (see 3rd scan) which has been repaired, the original vellum ties are missing, the front cover is visibly warped with some stain spotting, the rear cover is chipped along edges with a stain on back panel, but the binding is quite solid, overall contents are Very Good so a Good or better copy.
