E. or the apologie written some yeeres since for the marriage of persons ecclesiaticall, made good against the Cauils of C.E. Psuedo Catho like Priest. In three Books by Joseph Hall 1620 - (24) 208, 229-345, (25)pp   DETAILS Full early calf leather binding. A very scarce copy of Hall's work with engraved title page and decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated initials. Not seen at auction anywhere since 1982. Includes in Latin and English the text of a manuscript on the subject found at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and an excerpt from an epistle of Erasmus on the subject of marriage and the clergy. Joseph Hall (July 1, 1574 - September 8, 1656), English bishop and satirist, was born at Bristow Park, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Bishop Hall's polemical writings, were vigorous and effective, and many of his devotional writings have been often reprinted. It is by his early work as the censor of morals and the unsparing critic of contemporary literary extravagance and affectations that he is best known. CONDITION The binding is split in the centre and the second section is detached.  Page 147 is loose is detached but present.  The front board is attached and the rear board is detached but present.  The front inner hinge is strained and holding by one cord only. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping to the corners and some small worm holes to the rear board.  The spine is chipped with loss to the top and bottom and is becoming detached.  It is split in the centre and at the top.  Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from some mild spots in places and the odd handling mark.  There is a small worm hole to the top of the first few pages.  The top corner of the title page is missing and the edges are a little tattered.  Overall the binding needs work (though should be rescued as is early and complete) but the book is quite clean internally and is a complete copy of an extremely scarce book that would benefit from a rebind or repair.
