Resolves A Duple Century 5th Edition by Owen Felltham: w a large alphabeticall table thereunto 1634 - London - Imprinted for Henry Seite and are to be sould at the Tygers head in St Paules Church yard 7" by 5" - 448pp plus table   DETAILS Very scarce and early edition of this famous work in unusually good condition.    Rebacked with the original boards and part of the original spine laid down. This is the fifth impression of Feltham's work which was first published in 1620, very hard to find and usually only seen in the much more common editions of the 1670s onwards.  The book has a delightful illustrated title page and engraved head and tail pieces and illuminated initials.  The pagination is continuous but there is a second title page at page 318 dated 1633. Owen Feltham (1602 – February 23, 1668) was an English writer, author of a book entitled Resolves, Divine, Moral, and Political (c. 1620), containing 146 short essays. It had great popularity in its day.  It contains many sound, if not original or brilliant, reflections, and occasional felicities of expression. Feltham was for a time in the household of the Earl of Thomond as chaplain or sec., and published (1652), Brief Character of the Low Countries. CONDITION The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached.  There is some minor wear to the extremities including some scratches to the boards bumping to the corners.  The book has been rebacked with the original boards and part of the original spine.  The original spine is cracked in places and obviously has some loss.  Internally the book is generally clean apart from some handling marks and some mild spots in places.  There are some copperplate annotations in the margin of some pages.  The final page has been cut under Finis and the bottom half is missing.  There are some cooperplate notes to the reverse of this page.  The "To the Reader" page has an closed L shaped tear which very slightly affects the edge of the text.  The end papers have been renewed.  Overall considering the age of the text this book is in very good condition.
