A crisp set with good margins. The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, Begun in the Year 1641. With the precedent Passages, and Actions, that contibuted thereunto, and the happy End, and Conclusion therof by the King's blessed Restoration, and Return upon the 29th of may in the Year 1660. Written by the Right Honourable Edward, Earl of Clarendon, Late Lord High Chancellor of England, Privy Counsellour in the Reigns of King Charles the First and Second. A classic work that has remained one of the most important sources of British history. Considered a great contribution to the art of biography and autobiography, the work is valued for portraits of the author's contemporaries. Edward, Earl of Clarendon (1609-74), was one of the first great historical English writers, and held the offices of Lord High Chancellor of England and Chancellor of the University of Oxford. He was chief adviser to Charles I during the English Civil War and thereafter to Charles II, who appointed him Lord Chancellor. After being falsely accused of treason he fled to France where he wrote this, his major work. CONDITION The bindings are tight and firm and all covers are firmly attached. All three volumes have been nicely rebound with their original calf leather boards laid down. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the boards which are chipped and bumped, and are damaged with a small loss of leather. Internally the books are clean and bright apart from some isolated spotting and handling marks, affecting the end papers and title pages in particular. There are also some isolated worming holes to the first few rear end pages of Vol. II, and to the front first few pages of Vol. III, including to the frontispiece and title page. The worming holes do not affect the text. The frontispiece to Vol. I is in facsimile, but the other two volumes have their original frontipieces. The frontispiece to Vol. II is chipped along the outer edge. One of the original front blank end papers to Vol. III is detached and missing, and there is also some mild water staining to the top and bottom corner of the front end papers and first few pages of text to Vol. III. There is some mild water staining, again to the top and bottom corners, of the front end papers, frontispiece and title page of Vol. II, and some mild water staining to a number of pages of Vol. I. There is also a small hole to the last page of text to Vol. I which does not affect the text. If you want to keep an eye on what is coming up, just add us to your favourites list!
