London: Printed in the Year 1709. First Edition! Quarto, measuring 8" x 6.25". Bound in what appears to be its Original Binding of 1/2 Leather with Marbled Boards, Professionally rebacked with Original Spine laid over! Contains 258 printed pages plus advertisement, a full page Engraving / Plate of Animals, and a Map of North America that someone has tipped in. Lacks only the Map of Carolina otherwise Complete. The last Auction Record is for the year 2000 when Sotheby's sold a copy for $9,600. Vail 311; Pilling Algonquian, p. 300; Field 896; Wroth Mirror of the Indian, p. 31; Clark 3:115; Sabin 39451; JCB Catalogue III, p. 125; European Americana 709/91; Simmons 1709#11 JOHN LAWSON, the author of this work, was employed by the Carolina government as a land-surveyor. His occupation, however, led to his untimely demise, as the native Indians realized that the surveyor’s presence was always preceded by more white settlers and, subsequently, their displacement. In 1811 Lawson was captured by Tuscarora Indians while ascending the Neuse River and was sentenced to be burned at the stake. He "was the first victim of Indian vengeance" (Field, p. 229). Ironically, Lawson’s narrative supplies one of our few firsthand accounts of the southern coastal tribes soon decimated by war and disease. TERMS: Paypal Payments MUST HAVE A CONFIRMED ADDRESS!
