Ad Codices fere omnes cum impressos tum Manuscriptos diligenter recensuit, nova Versione donavit, & Notis illustravit, Joannes Hudsonus, S. T. P. Aulae B. Mariae Virginis Principalis, & Protobibliothecarius Bodleianus. Duobus Voluminibus Josephus (c. 37 – c. 100), who became known, in his capacity as a Roman citizen, as Flavius Josephus, was a 1st century Jewish historian and apologist of priestly and royal ancestry who survived and recorded the Destruction of Jerusalem in 70. His works, including War of the Jews and Antiquities of the Jews, give an important insight into first-century Judaism. John Hudson (1662 – November 26, 1719), was an English classical scholar. He was educated at the University of Oxford, where the remainder of his life was spent. In 1701, he was appointed Bodley's librarian, and in 1711 principal of St Mary Hall, Oxford. His political views stood in the way of his preferment in the church and university. As an editor and commentator, he enjoyed a high reputation both at home and abroad. His works, chiefly editions of classical authors, include the following: Velleius Paterculus (1693), Thucydides (1696), Geographcae Veteris Scriptores Graeci minores (1698–1712) containing the works and fragments of 21 authors and the learned, though diffuse, dissertations of Henry Dodwell, the first edition of Aelius Moeris', De Vocibus Atticis et Hellenicis (1712), and Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews (1720, published posthumously by his friend Anthony Hall, the antiquary), a correct and beautifully printed edition, with variorum notes and translation. CONDITION The bindings are tight and firm and all covers are attached. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the boards which are rubbed and the corners chipped and bumped. The books have been recently rebacked. Internally the books are clean and bright throughout apart from some isolated spotting and handling marks. There are two ownership plates to the front paste down of both volumes, and both volumes also have some red ink marks to the front end papers and title page only. There is a copperplate inscription to a rear end paper of Vol. II, and the last page of text has a small closed tear.
