Johnson et al. 10" by 6" - Approx. 600 pp per volume DETAILS Rebacked set with original gilt tooled calf leather boards and gilt lettering to spines. The first edition thus and in twenty one volumes complete. Enlarged edition by Alexander Chalmers of Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Most Eminent Poets first published in 1781. Chalmers notes in his diary that he began this edition in August of 1805 and finished in November 1809. Poets included are: Geoffrey Chaucer, William Congreve, John Gay, Alexander Pope, John Milton, John Dryden, Michael Drayton, and Shakespeare. CONDITION The bindings are tight and firm and all covers are attached, apart from the front board of Vol. 18 which is detached from the text block. The front inner hinges of Vols. 3 and 12, and rear inner hinge of Vol. 19 are strained but holding. All of the twenty one volumes have been rebacked with their original calf leather boards. There is some wear to the extremities. The spines are chipped and a few of the boards have been damaged with loss of leather. The corners are also bumped, and the front inner hinges of Vols. 6 and 17 are cracked. Internally the books are clean and bright apart from some isolated spotting.
