Lives of Edward and John Philips, Nephews and Pupils of Milton By William Godwin First Edition 1815 - London - Longman et al. 12" by 9" - 410 pp DETAILS Cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine. First edition and a scarce book, which is illustrated with two lovely engraved portraits. This rare book is an ex library copy and is therefore priced accordingly. Lives of Edward and John Philips, Nephews and Pupils of Milton. Including various particulars of the literary and political history of their times. By William Godwin. To which are added I. Collections for the life of Milton. By John Aubrey, printed from the manuscript copy in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. II. The life of Milton. By Edward Philips. Printed in the year 1694. William Godwin (3 March 1756 – 7 April 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. He is considered one of the first exponents of utilitarianism, and one of the first modern proponents of anarchist, or at least minarchist, philosophy. Godwin is most famous for two books that he published within the space of a year: An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, an attack on political institutions, and Things as They Are: The Adventures of Caleb Williams, which attacks aristocratic privilege, but is also virtually the first mystery novel. CONDITION The binding is firm, but both covers are detached though present. There is some wear to all the extremities. The spine is chipped with loss, and the boards are also chipped and sunned. There is a library reference number to the spine. Internally the book is bright apart from some occasional spotting and some offsetting from the plates. There is a library stamp to the first front blank end paper, to the rear of the frontispiece, and to the title page only. There is a small closed tear to the edge of page 257 that does not affect the text, and a pencil reference number to the rear of the title page. The first front blank end paper is also chipped and becoming detached at the bottom of the spine. If you want to keep an eye on what is coming up, just add us to your favourites list!
