Description
<> kwevans Store ***The Southern Cookbook*** Of Fine Old Recipes Complied and Edited ByLillie S. LustingS. Claire SondheimSarah RenselCopyright 1939 Original 1939 edition of "THE SOUTHERN COOK BOOK OF FINE OLD RECIPES" from the Culinary Arts Press; on wooden boards.  Contains 322 "traditional" southern dishes.  The Mammy archetype is the portrayal within a narrative framework of a domestic servant of African descent, generally good-natured, often overweight, and loud.   Mammies at the time simply could not rely on written recipes at the time, so most of the wonderful recipes from these great cooks derive from tradition and years of experience for many were not learned in the manner of reading and writing.  One of the dishes is even called plantation soup which shows the recipes age beacause Mammies created magic in their kitchens with whatever they could. It is adorned with numerous illustrations and songs sung by the plantation slave of the Old South. The book contains numerous line drawings which were meant to celebrate the rich history of the Southern African-American when the book was published, but contain the racist stereotypical portrayal of African-Americans at the time.  Many of the illustrations make use of the "N" word, showing the era where racially inappropriate and insensitive products were widely available. Just a few of the wonderful recipes included are:  Pigs in Blankets, Buttermilk Muffins, Confederate Coffee Cake, Pendennis Turtle Soup, North Carolina Syllabub, Corn Meal Mush, Hopping John, Creole Goulash, Pot Likker, Corn Meal Dodgers, Opossum, Cracklin Bread, Pickaninny Donuts, Plantation Soup, Kentucky Burgoo, Jambalaya (a Creole Dish), Chitterlings, Mississippi Cole Slaw, Miss Lee's Southern Corn Bread, Spoon Bread, Mulatto Bread, Beaten Biscuits, Chess Pie, New Orleans Crepes, Molasses Pudding, Fruit Cake, Confederate Coffee Cake, Short'nin' Bread, Topsy's Nut Drop Cookies, Colonial Cookies, Chocolate Indians, Florida Pralines, and Goober Brittle.  It measures 9.25" X 6.25"  Book is in Very good condition.     .
