BAKER & HAMILTON COMPANY CATALOG  The first volume in this set is a very rare, highly collectible and highly prized general hardware catalog from the early 1940’s. It is the “Baker, Hamilton And Pacific Company Catalogue No. 11,” which was published by the Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company of San Francisco, CA in the year 1941. This volume is hardbound in yellow-orange cloth boards with black and red lettering on the coverboard and on the spine. On the back coverboard is the company logo (see image). The book contains a whopping 3,116 pages and is profusely illustrated with B&W photographs of the companies facilities and showrooms in San Francisco and Oakland along with a sheer multitude of vignette engravings and etchings of products sold by the company – several on each page. The size of the volume is 8 ¼” wide by 10 ½” tall and it is over 3 ¼” thick.  The volume weighs 7 pounds. The date of publication is not found anywhere in the volume. However, the indirect key to the date is found in the section beginning on page 332 that advertises Firestone Gum Dipped Tires for automobiles. A listing of tires sizes for different makes, models and years of automobiles ends with the year 1940. Thus, it is presumed that the catalog was published in 1940/41. Summary of the Contents of the Catalog: This catalog has just about everything imaginable including hardware, hand implements, tools, cutlery, pumps and pump parts, rope and pulleys, automotive parts and tires, firearms, structural steel stock, iron forges, bicycles, children’s toys, fishing gear and tackle, and even fine imported China and crystal – all nicely illustrated with vignette etchings. Just a mere sampling of images of random pages accompany this description. Just casually perusing the catalogue will take many hours and even days or weeks. The detailed descriptions and especially the prices are certain to please and will often surprise. Statement of Condition of the Catalog: The condition of this catalog is deemed to be good (GOOD +). The binding is tight. I did note a couple of pencil marks in the text in just a few places, but this is not extensive. The last few pages of the catalogue show some damp staining at the very edges of the pages and this is evident in some of the accompanying digital images. The coverboards are soiled and are slightly warped. However, despite these relatively minor imperfections, this is a very well preserved copy of this historical document worthy of any collection. HISTORY OF THE BAKER & HAMILTON COMPANY: The second volume in this set is entitled, "A Century of Hardware and Steel - Being the story of Baker & Hamilton, a business institution which has helped to write the history of Califorina and the Pacific Coast" by David Warren Ryder with illustrations by Dan Adair and published in 1949 by Historical Publications, San Francisco, CA.  This is a FIRST EDITION of the work and it is also SIGNED AND INSCRIBED on the first free endpaper by Wakefield Baker, grandson of the founder and a latter day President of Baker & Hamilton (see image). This volume is hardbound in red cloth over boards with gilt lettering on the spine.   It contains a total of 119 pages and is nicely illustrated with 22 duotone plates /engravings, portraits of principals, company buildings and earthquake devastation.  The size of the book is 6 3/4" wide by 9 1/2" tall. Summary of the Contents of the History: This volume presents an adulatory history of the company, which is done in a style that also tells the history of the State of California.  The Baker & Hamilton Company was founded in the Gold Rush days and survived the Great Earthquake of 1906 to go on to become one of the great economic forces in the development of the Pacific Coast. Statement of Condition of the History: The condition of this volume is deemed to be excellent (NEAR FINE).  The spine is sun faded.  Other than that one minor imperfection, the book is in like new condition and worthy of any historical collection.      ABOUT THE BAKER, HAMILTON & PACIFIC COMPANY: A designated City of San Francisco Landmark, The Baker Hamilton Building located at 601 Townsend was constructed in 1905 for the Pacific Hardware & Steel Company. When the building escaped the 1906 earthquake and fire unscathed, Pacific Hardware & Steel enjoyed several prosperous years and became one of the largest hardware firms in the western USA. After the First World War In 1918, Pacific Hardware & Steel merged with Baker & Hamilton, a company that had been selling innovative agricultural tools, pumps, shovels, picks and other mining implements since the Gold Rush days. The newly merged company came to be known as Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company. This company, whose name later reverted to just Baker & Hamilton, occupied a main office, showroom and warehouse at 700 Seventh Street in San Francisco into the early 1980s. Back in the 1930s, Baker & Hamilton invented what they called a “Model Store,” which showed hardware retailers the newest and best ways of displaying products. In fact, several photos of the model store and sample displays are found in the catalogue offered here (photos not shown here, but present in the catalogue). Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company Catalogs are highly prized as collector items and rarely come up for sale or at auction.   The history volume likewise is a collector's item due to the fact that it is inscribed and signed by one of the Company's Presidents.  Together this set of books represents a real tangible slice of history of the Pacific Coast.  Don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of history!  PURCHASE:  THE MONTANA LOGGER is very pleased to offer these two highly collectible volumes including the Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Co. catalog and a history of the company at a very reasonable Buy-It-Now price.  We will also entertain resonable offers for this set of books.  NOTES: 1.  SHIPPING WITHIN THE CONTINENTAL USA (CONUS) IS FREE IF YOU BUY-IT-NOW OR SUBMIT AN ACCEPTABLE OFFER FOR THIS BOOK SET.  SHIPMENT OUTSIDE OF CONUS OR TO FOREIGN DESTINATIONS WILL BE AT COST.  PLEASE REQUEST A SHIPPING QUOTE BEFORE PURCHASE. 2.  WE WARMLY WELCOME INTERNATIONAL BUYERS.
