Description
“A WAY OF SEEING” (SIGNED)Photography by Helen Levitt SCARCE 2nd EDITION (1st PRINTING)Published by Horizon Press, New York, 1981 In 1981, this highly sought-after title was republished in a larger format and expanded to include 24 previously unpublished photographs along with an unabridged version of James Agee's essay. This is street photography at its finest and most emotive, marking a shift toward a more personal perspective. Agee refers to this brand of photography as the “richest in emotion,” as compared with more static and staged photography, and he remarks that this “lyrical work is the simplest and most direct way of seeing the everyday world, the most nearly related to the elastic, casual, and subjective way in which we ordinarily look around us...In their general quality and coherence, moreover, the photographs as a whole body, as a book, seem to me to combine into a unified view of the world, an un-insistent but irrefutable manifesto of a way of seeing, and in a gently and wholly unpretentious way, a major poetic work.” In “The Photobook,” Parr and Badger describe Levitt's achievement: "Levitt's photographs are beautiful - major underrated works. Like Henri Cartier-Bresson, she achieves a rare balancing act: her pictures have sentiment without being sentimental, always maintaining an objective distance...The casual observer of these pictures, dazzled by their poetry, could easily miss the harsher realities masked by the surface warmth and joie de vivre." This book is in VERY FINE/FINE condition and is SIGNED by the Artist. It is a hardcover with a printed dust jacket, with some rippling near the crown of the spine. The blue cloth boards are blind stamped with Helen Levitt's monogram. Note that this is the 1st PRINTING of the 2nd edition of A Way of Seeing from 1981, expanded and with restored text by James Agee from 1946. The Second Edition is just as SCARCE as the First Edition. This book contains 15 pages with 68 plates, is printed by Meriden Gravure and measures 10 ¾ x 9 ¾ inches.
