Description
Item: Twenty Years After - A Historical Romance (sequel to the Three Musketeers) by Alexandre Dumas. 479+ page softback book published by George Routledge and Sons, Broadway Ludgate Hill (London) - New York Lafayette Place. Undated circa 1865-1877 - see 'Dating this book' below. Dating this book: This particular book is one of the cheap 'Shilling volumes/books' published by George Routledge and Sons that were published from 1848 - note the prominence of the 'one shilling' price in the front bottom left-hand corner of the cover design. This particular book was published in 1865, or sometime shortly after this date, as the publishers name 'George Routledge & Sons' stated on the cover of this book, and on the inside title-page, was only adopted by the company in 1865. (Also the New York office, which opened in 1854, is listed on the title-page). In the rear of this book there are a number of adverts for books published by George Routledge and Sons. The last of these adverts is for Routledge's Six Penny Series'. This is a list of 8 books that are soon to be published. The last title listed is The Arabian Nights - this title was first published by George Routledge and Sons as a 'Sixpenny book' book in 1877. Taking into account the above mentioned change in 'company name' (to George Routledge and Sons) in 1865 and the advert at the rear of the book for the soon to be published 'Sixpenny The Arabian Nights' that is known to have first been published in 1877, it is reasonable to assume that this book was published sometime between 1865 & 1877. Content: The sequel to "The Three Musketeers" (originally published in 1845). Two decades have passed since the musketeers triumphed over Cardinal Richelieu and Milady. Time has weakened their resolve and dispersed their loyalties. But treasons and stratagems still cry out for justice: civil war endangers the throne of France, while in England, Cromwell threatens to send Charles I to the scaffold. Dumas brings his immortal quartet out of retirement to cross swords with time, the malevolence of men and the forces of history. But their greatest test is a titanic struggle with the son of Milady, who wears the face of Evil. Condition: Good/Excellent Condition. Softback good condition; minor wear to covers/corners/edges/spine, creases to covers, uniforming fading of spine (titles unaffected), marks. Pages excellent condition; detached from cover, slight slanting of spine, minor marks when viewed collectively side-on page faces unaffected & very bright & clean (for a book that is at least 128 years old), occasional handling mark/crease to corner of page.
