SquareTrade © AP6.0 ajfrank store ARIANE DANDOIS (TWO VOLUMES) / SOTHEBY'S / 10-07 Sotheby's. ARIANE DANDOIS (TWO VOLUMES). Sotheby's, NY, 2007. 1st Edition. 4to (approx 8.25 x 10.5"). These are the two Sotheby's Auction Catalogs for Sale No. N08361 held in New York on October 25 and 26, 2007. Two Volumes. Publisher's glossy pictorial wraps. 439; 447 pp. 828 lots. Lavishly illustrated entirely in color. These are new, unopened catalogs, in perfect, pristine condition. AS NEW."For glamour and gloss, not even the cream of Bond Street can beat the chicest of the Parisian antiques stores. One of the most alluring of all, Ariane Dandois, until this summer on the rue Fauborg-Saint-Honoré, is having a complete clearance of its opulent empire and extravagant oriental antiques, in a two-day auction at Sotheby's New York. Though the two-volume doorstop of a catalogue doesn't promise any cheap deals (estimates rarely drop below $3,000), there is always hope of a bargain, because the majority of lots will be offered without reserve. In other words, everything must go on the day. The woman behind the store, Ariane Dandois, has been in the business for 34 years, and is renowned among the international dealers that shuttle between Grosvenor House, Palm Beach and the Biennale des Antiquaires in Paris, for her taste and decorating flair. Her Russian, Baltic French and Italian furniture, chandeliers, mirrors, paintings and oriental art, from the 18th and 19th centuries are being exhibited in New York from 20 October, in a display styled by interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux (the Chilean decorator renowned for his look of neoclassical luxury). The redoubtable Madame Dandois began her career in the world of public relations, while pursuing her private passion "art and antiques" in a series of courses, topped up by voracious book-reading and museum-going. In 1973, the opportunity presented itself to give up her PR firm and open a gallery in partnership with oriental dealer Jean-Claude Ciancimino, and her collections of Japanese screens, Ming furniture and Indian sculpture soon caught the imagination of influential collectors: Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, were among her first clients. For the past six years, Dandois has worked with Ondine, her daughter "a fabulously groomed, artfully blonde lady, the mirror image of her mother" as second in command. Ondine studied art history at Princeton, and it was expected that she would step into Ariane's shoes when Ariane retired, but instead, in July their shop shut for the last time. Now, their carefully curated stock comes under the hammer, marking the end of an antiquarian institution." Shipping weight nine pounds. Fabulous catalogs. Quite scarce.
