D. c1817. The set contains sixty color plates comprising ten hand colored copper engravings and fifty plates printed in colors, probably from an etched stone, some finished by hand. Half title in second and third volumes. Contemporary three quarter green calf and red marbled boards, gilt-lettered spines. Minor wear to extremities. Scattered foxing. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Plates also with some minor foxing. Overall very good. We are told this was the first American book with color-printing, and also a foundation work in American botanical studies, notable for its fine plates. Bigelow, a native of Massachusetts, attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, where he became keenly interested in botany as a student of Benjamin Smith Barton, then a professor as well as the leading botanist in the United States. Following his graduation in 1810 he entered private practice in Boston, and himself became a professor at Harvard Medical School, in 1815. Each of the tree volumes measures 10 and one half inches by 7 and one quarter inches by 1 inch. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6% state sales tax. Buyers outside the USA are responsible for any taxes, tariffs or customs that might apply. DO NOT go to UPS.COM and try to figure out the shipping charges by entering the measurements of the item. The piece will have to be properly packed and then put in a proper, strong box (which meets the UPS standards) and then that box has to be put inside another box and properly packed. This will make the size increase along with materials and shipping charges. Many items become oversized when packed properly, which does raise shipping costs over normal rates.
