Description
BALLET: 104 PHOTOGRAPHS by Alexey Brodovitch Text by Edwin Denby J.J. Augustin Publisher New York Copyright 1945 by Alexey Brodovitch _____________________________________ I am pleased to offer this distinguished volume of photographs, one of a published 500. It is hardcover, the boards being made of a laminated material similar to a thick, hard, grey cardboard. The spinecloth is grey linen or buckram. Oblong, 11" x 8 5/8". Cream colored endpapers and text pages. The first title page has the word BALLET only, verso states: J.J. Augustin Publisher, New York with an insignia and date. Following is a title page with additional information; page 6 indicates copyright: 1945; page 7 lists, in various stylized type, the eleven ballets of which there are 104 photographs. Page 9 states: 1935 - 1937. There is a 3 page Index at the rear of book. The Ballets are: Les Noces; Les Cent Baisers; Symphonie Fantastique, Le Tricorne; Boutique Fantasque; Cotillion; Choreartium; Septieme Symphony; Le Lac Des Cygnes; LesSylphides; Concurrence Some Dancers: Tamara Toumanova; Tatiana Riabouchinska; Alexandra Danilova; Irina Barinova; Leonide Massine; Sono Osato; Yurek Shabelevsky; David Lichine; Vera Nelidova; Lubov Tchernicheva; Edna Tressar; Leonora Marra; Paul Petroff; Vera Zorina; Roman Jasinsky. Other than mild age toning to the cream colored stock, this hard cover volume is without flaws......tightly bound and unmarked throughout. Photographs are full page in black and white, matte surface, gravure process. Regrettably the dustcover has not fared as well and will need professional restoration. Currently it is in two portions....parted completely at the spine. The edges are significantly worn and, although there is no long tear to front or rear, there are short nicks and tears to edges with a 1" piece missing from top left corner. It was designed apparently to have each board slip into a sleeve as the inner flaps are arranged so. It has a matte finish and the word "Ballet" in stylized type taking up the front. Much has been written about this book and Alexey Brodovitch. It is certainly an outstanding work of photographic art portraying the magnificent dancers and productions of the legendary Ballets Russes. ___________________________________________________ Photographs of this book are provided herewith. _________________________________ Shipping is offered via USPS Priority for delivery in the U.S. @ $10.00 For a rate to International destinations, please contact me.
