Description
Up for auction is a rare complete set of three books on NATIVE AMERICAN BASKETRY OF CALIFORNIA by late Dr. Christopher L. Moser. The set comes in a decorative and very rare slipcase. According to the Riverside Mueum store brochure only 100 sets in the slipcase were produced. These books have been out of print for quite some time and the complete set with the slipcase is virtually unobtainable. The set contains:   1. AMERICAN INDIAN BASKETRY OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA Published by Riverside Museum in 1989, this book accompanied the exhibit of Northern California Native American baskets in 1989 and 1990 at the Riverside Museum. This oversized (9 X 12) softcover book and catalog has 95 pages, and is profusely illustrated with 12 color plates, 20 maps, 55 figures and 181 photos of baskets, and bibliography. The book showcases 181 baskets from all 20 Northern California tribes (Hupa, Ainkyone, Whilkut, Chilula, Yurok, Karuk, Tolowa, Nomlaki, Wintu, Yana, Chimariko, Atsugewi, Achumawi, Modoc and Klamath). Detailed descriptions are provided for each illustrated basket in this collection, one of the finest books on basketry of this area.   2. NATIVE AMERICAN BASKETRY OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA Published by Riverside Museum in 1986, this book accompanied the exhibition of "Native American basketry of Central California" from the permanent collection of the Riverside Municipal Museum, July 1, 1986 to June 28, 1987. Two essays are also included: Eva Slater describes Panamint basketry designs, and Craig Bates discusses the basketry of Northern Miwoks. This oversized (9 X 12) softcover book and catalog has 115 pages, and contains 381 b/w and 11 color photographs, 4 figures, 22 maps, and bibliography. This is a definitive book on the subject, and one of the finest books on basketry of this area. More than 300 Central California Indian baskets are illustrated in this catalogue of baskets from the collection of the Riverside Museum. Fourteen different tribes from the Coastal Zone, Central valley, Sierra Nevada, Northern Mojave Desert, and California Great Basin regions are  represented: Panamint, Paiute, Washoe, Miwok, Yokuts, Maidu, Patwin, Pomo, Kawaiisu and others). Detailed descriptions are provided for each illustrated basket in this collection.   3. NATIVE AMERICAN BASKETRY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA Published by Riverside Museum in 1993, this book accompanied the exhibition of "Native American basketry of Southern California" 1992 and 1993 at the Riverside Municipal Museum. This oversized (9 X 12) softcover book and catalog has 155 pages, and contains 20 color and 872 b/w photographs, 12 drawings, 15 maps and bibliography. Each basket is illustrated and given a detailed description, and there are photographs of the weavers and accompanying baskets. One of the finest books on basketry of the Southern area of California. This book is a solid reference in the difficult field of identification of basketry. Shapes, designs, materials, tribes and known weavers are reliably identified for the geographic area of Southern California. Chris Moser put together this pictorial review with photos of baskets from several museums in southern California.   These beautifully produced and very inclusive volumes are an excellent reference for art historians, collectors and scholars of Native American basketry and California basketry.   The books and the slipcase are in like new unused condition.
