By Louis Senault. 1690. Paris. Printed by the author and De Hansy. First edition, second issue, entirely engraved throughout a monument to French engraved books by the calligrapher Senault. Each page is made from engraved plates, the title page and the first page –or subtitle- for every chapter is highly decorated with historiated initials and head pieces. The text is one of the last Book of Hours ever printed, engraved in a cursive style, all pages framed in a double ruler, plenty engraved historiated initials, vignettes, floral arrangement to borders. On page 210, the sirens have their bosoms covered by flowers, indicating us it´s not the first edition. The work was initially dedicated to the Dauphine of Bavaria who was not pleased with the work for it probably seems to be a lusty if not impudorous illustrations. Endeed the work has a rather sensual character, it´s delicate and pronounced figures and edges don´t insinuate the chastity and profundness of spirit that should transmit such a devotional. Brunet, III, 148. Cohen-de-Ricci, 487.   A few copies listed from 2,000usd-6,500usd   In-4to (189mm x 128mm). Contemporary dark green morocco with gold gilt and richly blind-tooled floral ornamented spine, gold gilt on boards and edges, green silk linings. 2[blank] + 1 + 260 + 1 + 1[blank].   Binding Condition minor splitting on upper side of spine, slight rubbing to edges, very good condition overall   Text Condition fresh copy, minor foxing, mainly marginal, broad margined, excellent condition   PLEASE SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS BEFORE BIDDING
