Paris to the Moon Adam Gopnik Synopsis; Much of this memoir concerning Gopnik's five-year experience as an American in Paris was printed as the New Yorker column "Paris Journal," where it was the recipient of a 1998 George Polk Award and a 1997 National Magazine Award. With wit and insight, Gopnik relates the joys and difficulties of relocating his young American family to the romantic boulevards of Paris, where his expatriate dreams mingled with the realities of family life. Publisher's Note Paris. The name alone conjures images of chestnut-lined boulevards, sidewalk cafés, breathtaking façades around every corner--in short, an exquisite romanticism that has captured the American imagination for as long as there have been Americans. In 1995, Adam Gopnik, his wife, and their infant son left the familiar comforts and hassles of New York City for the urbane glamour of the City of Light. Gopnik is a longtime New Yorker writer, and the magazine has sent its writers to Paris for decades--but his was above all a personal pilgrimage to the place that had for so long been the undisputed capital of everything cultural and beautiful. It was also the opportunity to raise a child who would know what it was to romp in the Luxembourg Gardens, to enjoy a croque monsieur in a Left Bank café--a child (and perhaps a father, too) who would have a grasp of that Parisian sense of style we Americans find so elusive. So, in the grand tradition of the American abroad, Gopnik walked the paths of the Tuileries, enjoyed philosophical discussions at his local bistro, wrote as violet twilight fell on the arrondissements. ." Industry reviews "...PARIS TO THE MOON  is much more than a volume of zingers or a litany of a foreigner's frustrations. It is a deeply contemplative consideration of a place that has fascinated citizens of the world for centuries. Gopnik's is the thinking man's Paris, a place whose appeal is so evident, yet still worth pondering. " McMahon "The distinctive brilliance of Gopnik's essays lies in his ability to pick up a subject one would never have imagined it possible to think deeply about and then cover it in thoughts, making connections with literature, sociology and philosophy--all treated in a highly readable way." De Botton "[Gopnik is] more an eager explainer than a grand theorist of the difference between Paris and New York. And [his] knack for comparison makes him a master of simile...." Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Levy (10/20/2000) "Gopnik does write clearly and with verve, and he is intelligent, if also predictable." Boston Phoenix - William Corbett (12/07/2000) Into the Wadi Michele Drouarl Into the Wadi is the compelling and intensely personal story of an australian woman and the Jordanian family into which she marries. In a deeply engaging style - sensuous, accessible and thoughtful - Michele Drouart writes about marriage, female friendship, and the preciousness of culture and community. French Seduction: An American’s Encounter with France, Her Father, and the Holocaust Eunice Lipton FRENCH SEDUCTION is a fierce book about pleasure and hatred. Eunice Lipton falls in love with France across her father’s Parisian fantasies and his own unpredictable charms. He beguiles her with stories of French cafés, great literature, beautiful people. But he’s fickle, his attention wanders, he disappears on her. She ends up living in a country that does the same. Pleasuring the senses never stops in France, but neither does the French distaste for Outsiders. “He loves me, He loves me not,” this Jewish New Yorker wonders daily. Tales of French seduction and betrayal grip the reader as Lipton couples the sunshine of Impressionism with the anti-Semitism of the Dreyfus Affair; the Roaring Twenties with sneering xenophobia; the juicy voluptuousness of 18th century Versailles with the unspeakable poverty outside the Chateau’s gates. As Lipton tries to forgive her father’s capriciousness, she also is trying to forgive France for the crime that is at the emotional heart of this book: France’s betrayal of its Jews to the Nazis. On this journey, Lipton uncovers France’s debilitating weakness, as well as her father’s long hidden shame. This passionate blend of cultural history and autobiography makes FRENCH SEDUCTION unlike any other book about France today. " Industry reviews "Before I read French Seduction I never understood France. I'd been there many, many times and had many business and personal relationships there but until I read this book I never realized what a Francophile I was, nor what a Francophobe. Eunice Lipton recounts her own experience, her own life and in the process manages to capture something bigger. What unfolds is a gripping story of France seen from the perspective of a Jewish American woman. French Seduction is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand France as she relates to America, the rest of Europe and for that matter the world. Did I mention it's a page-turner? Isaac Mizrahi Girls of Riyadh Rajaa Alsanea Reviews........ Amazing book! Review created: 07/12/08 by: fallenstar87 The book goes through the lives of 4 Saudi girls (their names all changed), as told through the emails of their anonymous 5th friend, sent through a Yahoo! group, and whose scandalous tales of love and marriage and divorce and more rock Saudi society as many denounce her, praise her, and religiously read her emails which come every Friday after the prayer. Book has a great storyline nicely complimented by occasional analysis of Saudi society, and the way Saudi men think. There is so much more to say but you will just have to read the book to learn more!  Girls of Riyadh Review created: 04/08/08 by: cfries29 This was a thought provoking book. I enjoyed it because it offers a glimpse into the highly guarded lives of Saudi Arabian women living in the elite class. A bit of advice to readers - keep in mind that this is just one point of view, that it was written by a girl who was 24 years old (I commend her writing-it was quite good), and that it's considered controversial by SAUDI standards, not western standards. All in all, a pretty good read. I couldn't quite lose myself in the characters, but I still enjoyed it. Mafia Women Clare Longrigg The traditional role of women in the Cosa Nostra, both in Italy and the USA, ranges from "trophy wives" to drug runners. But this account shows that women are also taking a leading role and sometimes even turning informer, to win freedom from violent marriages and to give their children a future. Review..... A thorough and sensational survey of the role of women in the mafia. Claire Longrigg, a journalist with }The Guardian{, has tracked down and interviewed magistrates, police investigators and central female mafia figures. Her findings bring to life the drama and complexity of a distorted moral world; the stories she relates are, by turns, shocking, pathetic and simply astounding. "A horrifying tour de force" }Guardian Blueback by Tim Winton .....life is tough out at Longboat Bay. Every day the boy helps his mother earn their living from the sea and the land.
