Three volumes, THE CANTERBURY TALES OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER, illustrated by Sir William Russell Flint, this is the first edition of 1913, published in 500 sets only on handmade paper and bound in full gilt labelled vellum with green ties.   We can't say enough about Medici Society books printed at the Riccardi Press. These are wonderfully designed, lavishly, profusely illustrated and beautifully printed books on fantastic Riccardi paper, to illustrate the quality of the latter I have included some photographs of the actual paper, the embossed and watermarked designs on each and every page and the quality of the printing in close up. Please see the photos - the books are a pleasure to behold and are certain to become your library's treasures. Each page has the embossed Riccardi watermark inside a graphic design similar to a coat of arms. The paper is wonderful to touch, this book is a pleasure to behold and would make a fantastic gift. Photographs do not do justice to these very fine books. Here is an excerpt from Burlington Magazine review of the Medici Riccardi Press books: "...Nothing of the kind so good and cheap has ever been issued before...". Other reviews refer to the plates: " ...prints like these, which are at once true in general effect and will stand the test of the microscope in their details, can never be superseded...", and other interesting comments. (...In actuality, these editions were rather very expensive in their day of publication!..the books instantly became sought-after as collectable items, the quality of the bindings, paper and the exceptionally fine lithographic quality plates inside is superb. These are very special editions, highest quality.  )This book is truly fantastic, the illustrations are some of the most impressive and inspired work by W.R.Flint. BOOK: THE CANTERBURY TALES OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER, illustrated by Sir William Russell Flint.  Publisher:  Philip Lee Warner, London, Medici Society, 1913. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies, the book on handmade Riccardi paper. Publisher's original full vellum binding with green ties. (Our other set of the work, now sold, was bound in Holland boards, and the price was present on the front of the dustwrappers - Nine Pounds and Nine Shillings in 1913, probably per volume and likely the set was to be purchased in installments from the publisher, as each volume had this price on the wrappers. This was not exactly  cheap, actually, for 1913! This set is in vellum, I do not know what the original price was for the vellum bound set in 1913, but certainly much more, as vellum is the most valued material for bookbinding, then, and today.)  The set of books contains 36 mounted very fine lithographic quality plates after Flint's sensual and original watercolors, each under a captioned tissue guard. (TEG) Top edge gilt, others uncut. Internally and externally the books are FINE, unread, as-issued condition, noting only the elegant ornate contemporary bookplates on front pastedowns ( provenance, a British reader of title.) This set was a gift to us from my late mother-in-law, and was certainly very expensively purchased in her days. A superb set, certain to please. This book must be seen. The illustrations are stunning. (It is our opinion that the limited editions by W.R.Flint are still much undervalued in the world, given the quality of bindings, the quality of plates and printing, and the superb artwork.) Good luck and enjoy your win!     SHIPPING: We are happy to ship worldwide and to combine shipping on multiple purchases. All of our items are carefully packaged, insured and appropriately labelled.
