Description
AFTERPETER BOOKS Purveyors of Rare, Unusual, Antiquarian and Otherwise Interesting Books Century of Progress, 1933-1934 Photographs by Kaufmann and Fabry 15 in x 12 ¼ in Up for auction is a scarce volume of the Chicago Exposition of 1933-34. This is a copy of the book produced specifically for the major contributors to the exposition. The print run for this edition was extremely limited and according to the auction records of American Book Prices Current and Americana Exchange, only one other copy from the books presented to contributors has come up for auction in more than thirty years. The book is bound in blue pebble rolled morocco with stamping and lettering in gilt. The book does not have a title page (as issued) but only the dedication page and 51 sepia-toned photographs printed on heavy cream stock, each captioned in pencil in the margin. Kaufmann and Fabry were the official photographers of the Chicago Exposition of 1933-34; this volume presents 51 original photographs superbly demonstrating their artistry. This volume was presented to Mrs. Jacob Baur of Chicago and bears her name in gilt on the lower portion of the front board. Mrs. Baur was a prominent citizen of Chicago during the first half of the 20th century: she took over the Liquid Carbonic Company after her husband’s death and served as the company’s vice president. She was a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Illinois in 1932 and a candidate for U.S. Representative from Illinois 9th District in 1936. The book has blue silk mauve endsheets and is housed in its original custom slipcase. There is rubbing along the joints of the book (heavier to the front joint with a small split in the leather at the ends). There is also some rubbing on the spine. The interior of the book is in fine condition. This is a very rare opportunity to purchase one of the most fascinating and scarcest items relating to the Chicago Exposition of 1933-34. All offers will be considered. Shipping Information: Shipping for this item is $25.00 USD via UPS Ground within the Continental US. Insurance is required and will be determined based on final sale value. All other regions please inquire for accurate shipping quote.
