This is a heavy item weighing over 1.25kg with packaging. CONDITION: Very Good to Good (see table below for details). Some rubbing to boards and spine. Front hinge cracked and leather split down one side of spine, but board still attached. Some sunning to pages, and light foxing to some. Most plates with some degree of foxing (mainly light to moderate and often confined mainly to borders, but some plates with quite heavier foxing). Having said that, the plates are still in impressive condition, not least for the vividness of their hand-colouring and the 'realistic' style of the engravings. *Photo(s) given of actual book. CONTENTS: A rare complete work on the mammal collections of the Muséum d'histoire naturelle in Paris. The work is centred around the stunning hand-coloured engravings of animals. There are 54 engraved plates, most containing 2 mammals, plus a further hand-coloured engraved plate showing skulls of a selection of creatures. The text starts with a tables showing classification of mammals, and follows with text descriptions of the contents of each plate. The first few pages cover humans, but the remaining pages are divided into two, one for each creature pictured. There is foxing to all of the engravings, heavier to some, but light to moderate to most. It does not detract from the quality of the engravings themselves, or from the colouring of each engravings, the colours still bright. The plates include monkeys, a mole, polar bear, brown bear, badger, civet, lion, tiger, cats, dogs, fox, kangaroo, porcupine, rabbit, beaver, squirrel, rat, aardvark, armadillo, elephant, rhino, hippo, camels, giraffe, deer, gnu, goat, sheep, cows, horses, zebra, seals, whale and dolphin. The photos above provide a fair selection of the plates and their quality. Complete copies of this work are rare, single plates being a more common item for sale.
