Original gilt decorated beveled boards, worn, worn at corners, spine chipped to 3/16 max top and bottom, looks to be missing one blank front preliminary page, not the colored ep, small holes in the cloth in front and back gutters. Prev owner (Hattie L. Truesdell) signature to front blank, her small neat stamp to verso of frontis. Mod foxing to tissued frontis, significan foxing spot bottom of internal portrait plate, well away from the image; both images crisp. No evidence of any repairs over the years. Binding is shaken, not stirred, no hanging signatures, and remarkably, the pages are untoned and unfoxed. Seemingly a forgotten book until the litigations of the 1990's seeking to overturn Lt Flipper's dishonorable discharge, and President Clinton's eventual pardon, the book has been reprinted more than a few times, and has taken its place as a seminal work in black studies, military history, and in the study of the history of the United States Military Academy at West Point.
