Description
DAWN SALES NORTH ROBERT DEAN FRISBIE DOUBLEDAY AND COMPANY, INC. GARDEN CITY, NEW YORK 1949 COPYRIGHT 1949, BY ROBERT DEAN FRISBIE This is a stated "FIRST EDITION." It was the practice of Doubleday & Company previously known as Doubleday Doran, to specify it’s 1st Editions on the Copyright page. Omission of this statement would be the indication of a reprinted copy. Hardbound in very good condition with dust jacket, 307 pages includes a PREFACE, Detailed CONTENTS, PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS IN THIS BOOK, measures approximately 6" x 8 ½". The jacket displays a colorful period-style illustration on the cover and spine, with price intact on the fold over flap. It is in exceptionally nice condition with some age toning to the text areas but generally unfaded with only the very slightest bit of edge wear, no chipping or significant tears. It has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket cover for future protection. The boards are tan with titles stamped in brown on the spine. The surfaces are generally clean and straight with a slight forward lean and soil to the board and page edges but very little actual edge wear. The interior reveals intricately detailed end papers front and rear. Contents are clean and tight with hinges completely intact. Age toning is noted consistent to the date of publication but no foxing. A couple were noted to have a small soil blemish but otherwise, there are no previous owner names, notations, marks, creases or tears. "When the schooner Dawn sailed out of Papeete, Sam Strickland, war-weary and cynical, signed on as first mate. The island of Farue-nui was a port of call and of particular interest to Sam: it was here his grandfather had settled after marrying a Polynesian and died, leaving extensive land holdings." "As the Dawn drove for Farue-nui with her cargo of pigs, chickens, and South Sea Islanders, Sam found it hard to avoid the blanishments of Dinah, a girl he met in Papeete and who he had smuggled on board. He also found it hard to ignore the fact that the Dawn’s very strange crew evinced unusual interest in Farue-nui, and he soon became convinced that trouble would break out when they landed." - DOUBLEDAY & COMPANY Robert Dean Frisbie, became a noteworthy author and individual following his move from California to the Tahiti in the early 1920s. Being an appreciater of tropical islands and of the sipping spirits, Mr. Frisbie settled in the Cook Islands in 1924 on Danger Island, AKA Puka Puka, married a young Polynesian woman and reared five children. In 1929 he produced his first full-length literary work immortalizing his island in THE BOOK OF PUKA PUKA. Mr. Frisbie authored six books in all, with DAWN SAILS NORTH being his final work, the copyright having been granted shortly after his passing. Today it stands as one of the most difficult Robert Dean Frisbie books to obtain, with even one copy for sale on the www being a rarity. This particular 1st Edition with dust jacket is truly a treasure, a wonderful addition to Pacific Island library.
