Description
Ambroise Vollard, editor. Text by Paul Valery; Degas did not contribute his prints to art books during his lifetime. Potin had to etch as many as 3 different copper plates to capture the rich, feathery effects of Degas' monotypes. "In his superbly engraved plates of aquatint-etching, Potin has preserved the rich black and pastel colors of the originals" (Johnson). The binder, Jacques Anthoine-Legrain,(1907-70), perfected the geometric aesthetics and developed a style of using subtle manipulation of spaced curves. His bindings are included in most of the important collections formed since 1950. Ambroise Vollard, editeur, This is Book # 55.1936, Paris, 28 rue de Martignac. Folio (32.5 x 25.5cm). 26 COLOR AQUATINT ETCHINGS after original monotypes of Degas by Maurice Potin. Bound by J. Anthoine Legrain, signed, stamped in gilt, and blind to an overall circular geometric design of curved lines and swirls with small circles, gilt lettering to spine, red suede endpapers and doublures.
