Description
This is the super-hard-to-find oversized book containing reproductions of the amazing drawings of male nudes by the artist Don Bachardy - and signed by the artist, which makes this book SUPER rare.  (I guarantee the signature;  I am the agent for Don Bachardy and was present when Don signed the book!)  If there is one book of male nudes you would want to own, this is the one.  Magnificent - simply magnificent. The volume includes one of the cadaver portraits of Christopher Isherwood by Don.  More information on their 33 year marriage, and on the circumstances under which the cadaver paintings occurred, may be found in the highly-praised new documentary CHRIS AND DON. A LOVE STORY now playing in selected cities. Description: Hardcover. First edition. First printing. 96 pages. As new in as new dust jacket. Signed by the artist. Collection of drawings on subject. The single most beautiful book published on the art of Don Bachardy. Limited Edition of 2000 copies - the ENTIRE edition, no second printings.  The first and only edition, it is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Handsome black silk cloth boards with white titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued.  Art and brief Preface by Don Bachardy. Afterword reminiscence by the distinguished American novelist Armistead Maupin. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper in Lausanne, Switzerland to the very highest standards. In pale gray dust jacket with white titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the artist's male nude drawings, the product of a twenty-year period of painstaking and happy work. All of them were done on white paper using various media: Pen and ink with brush, stomp, pencil and ink wash, and black acrylic with water and brush. Each medium conjured a different kind of lyricism, sensuousness, and "character" (Bachardy's word). All of the models were friends or acquaintances rather than professional models or sitters. All of them are beautiful, surely because they naturally are, and just as surely because of Bachardy's deft hand. Don Bachardy will always be identified with the late great novelist Christopher Isherwood, who discovered him when he was only 18 years old, and who became his patron and lover for life. (See the newly released film documentary on Bachardy and Isherwood:  CHRIS AND DON. A LOVE STORY.)  Isherwood encouraged Bachardy's significant talents and opened doors for him at a time when, as Bachardy notes in his Preface, it was very difficult to persuade people to take off their clothes. With a few shy exceptions, it's the first thing models and actors voluntarily and eagerly do nowadays. Bachardy also asked each sitter to sign and date the drawing, "in open confession", a humble acknowledgment on Bachardy's part of the sitter's participation in his own portrait. Don't miss the article on Don appearing in the Sunday, June 29, 2008, Los Angeles Times! Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
