Description
Happy bidding, happy and peaceful reading! A beautiful and exceedingly rare book, one of 350 copies only, limited edition, numbered and signed by the illustrator. This collection of Fairy Tales from around the world was, quite remarkably, released during the scarce and difficult War years - and no doubt lifted the spirits with beautiful artwork, lavish gilt binding and the hope of a united and peaceful world. This book was published by Hodder and Stoughton in London, circa 1915 or 1916.   This very special and rare limited edition book is, of course none other than - EDMUND DULAC'S FAIRY BOOK: FAIRY TALES OF THE ALLIED NATIONS.       Book:  EDMUND DULAC'S FAIRY BOOK: FAIRY TALES OF THE ALLIED NATIONS. Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1915 or 1916 ( no date).  Publisher's original ornate gilt stamped full vellum binding, gilt stamped spine and cover. A special edition, this copy is one of 350 only, signed by Edmund Dulac and numbered on the limitation page. Superbly illustrated with 15 beautiful tipped-in color plates on gilt-edged cardstock. The text is printed on high quality thick handmade paper, of  Arches/Fabriano or watercolour type, possibly English Handmade Paper. The binding is very elaborately gilt-and-blue stamped white buckram, with a superb Art Deco design of Horses, Chrysanthemums ( the French-born artist Edmund Dulac was very influenced by oriental and Japanese art) and other ornament inspired by the home-countries of the selected fairy tales. The book with gilt upper edge, other edges deliberately left rough-cut, or uncut. An inspired work of art produced in a war-torn world, and very scarce due to the small run of 350 copies only. Very special.   The selected fairy tales include: Snegorotchka ( A Russian Fairy Tale), The Buried Moon ( An English Fairy Tale), White Caroline and Black Caroline ( A Flemish Fairy Tale), The Seven Conquerors of The Queen of Mississippi ( A Belgian Fairy Tale), The Serpent Prince ( An Italian Fairy Tale), The Hind Of The Wood ( A French Fairy Tale), Ivan And The Chestnut Horse ( A Russian Fairy Tale), The Blue Bird ( A French Fairy Tale), Bashtchelik or Real Steel ( A Serbian Fairy Tale), The Friar And The Boy ( An English Fairy Tale), The Green Serpent ( A French Fairy Tale),  Urashima Taro ( A Japanese Fairy Tale), The Fire Bird ( A Russian Fairy Tale.)   Book condition: VG/ALMOST NR FINE. Externally, VG, minor edgewear and soiling, minor tarnishing and rubbing to giltwork. Some bumping to corners, in particular to the lower right on upper board, slight wear to edges. Spine somewhat darkened commensurate with age, which is typical of the white-buckram bound early Hodder and Stoughton limited editions. Tight and square binding. Internally, VG. The free end papers/pastedowns browned as is typical, this, again, is inavoidable and occurs on all Hodder and Stoughton early limited editions. ( I believe this is due to the binding glue, which tends to darken the endpapers over 100 or so years..). Beyond the endpapers, no notable marks or any issues of note. No bookplates or inscriptions. Pages very slightly uniformly yellowed with age, minor fingermarks at some corners, the reverse of one plate mount with a light stain, occasional few pale spots, the exposed paper edges darkened. That stated, the contents are overall bright and clean, please do see the photographs as well as the word description. A very special limited edition by Edmund Dulac, very rare!
