Description
Up for auction is the Encyclopædia Britannica Volume Three 19 of 20 books in this collection (#2 is missing; both supplement books included) Printing date is 1797 by Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell This is, by far, the most stunning collection of literature I have ever seen. A collection of encyclopedias explaining in depth how our world was viewed over 200 years ago. These books are in very good condition. The bindings all have wear, and some of the covers are detached, but are still with the book. All original! No restoration has been attempted, nothing has been changed. These are absolutely unaltered. I have no clue about grading books, so I will let you be the judge of condition by the pictures. The only other set I found online is this: Book Details Encyclopaedia Britannica;ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA) [30 Day Returns Policy] Bookseller:Peter Harrington Antiquarian Bookseller(London, , United Kingdom) Bookseller Rating: Book Price:US $18,015.32 [Convert Currency] Quantity: 1 Shipping:[Rates & Speeds] Description: or, a Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Miscellaneous Literature; constructed on a plan, by which the different sciences and arts are digested into the form, of distinct treatises or systems, comprehending the history, theory, and practice, of each, according to the latest discoveries and improvements. Third Edition. The Encyclopaedia Britannica was first published in book form by its original founders, Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, in 1771 in Edinburgh, an enduring legacy of the Scottish Enlightenment. By its third edition, the Britannica had been expanded from a 3-volume set of dubious scholarship to this massive 20-volume work with authoritative articles. Although several other encyclopaedias competed with it (Rees's Cyclopaedia and the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana among them), only the Britannica thrived in the longer term. 18 volumes bound in 20, 4to (266 × 205 mm). Handsomely bound in contemporary diced russia, covers with thick-and-thin line rules in gilt, spines lettered and numbered in gilt, double raised bands with gilt rules either side and between, marbled endpapers, pale yellow edges. The accompanying 542 copper-engraved plates bound together in two separate volumes. Skilful restoration to some joints or headcaps, the occasional trivial mark, overall a most attractive set. Bookseller Inventory # 35475 _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our auction price is CONSIDERABLY lower. This is a great deal for any collector or re-saler. The copper engraved plates are phenominal. Scrutinize the photos for quality, as inspection is encouraged (more photos at bottom of page). You may never see a more comprehensive look into the late 1700's. This is a truly amazing piece of history that can be yours to own. This is also a great investment piece. This collection of encyclopedias will only increase in value over time. PASS THIS ON TO YOUR GRANDCHILDREN! **** We do not accept PayPal on any order over $250.00.
