Description
A most beautiful book. Little Brother & Little Sister, and Other Tales by the Brothers Grimm with darling illustrations by Arthur Rackham. This is one of the 525 copies only on English Hand Made Paper, as issued by Constable and Company in 1917. This is the English edition. In addition to the tipped-in color plates, the book is profusely illustrated with black and white drawings - one of my personal favorites is the drawing of a cat chasing mice, The Three Sons of Fortune. The other stories include some of our favourites, Little Brother and LIttle Sister, Snow White and Rose Red, Sweet Porridge, Thumbling's Travels, The Skilful Hunter, The True Sweetheart, The Twelve Brothers, The Three Spinners, The Star-Money, The Old Woman in The Wood, Bearskin, One-Eye-Two-Eyes-And-Three-Eyes,The Wishing Table.., The Wonderful Musician, The Cunning Little Tailor, The Gnomes, Hans The Hedgehog, The Nose Tree, The Three Feathers, The Goose Girl At The Well, - and twenty other fairy tales! ..The book is bound in the most wonderfully subtly-colored cloth, taupe-gray,with a gilt-stamped spine and gilt-stamped inset vignette on the cover. A stunning volume. Book: Little Brother & Little Sister, and Other Tales by the Brothers Grimm. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham and signed by Arthur Rackham on the limitation page. One of 525 copies only. Rare in good condition with fine plates. Publisher: Constable & Co., London, 1917. Full color frontis and 12 other tipped-in color plates ( 13 in total) under laid-in tissues, numerous black adn white illustrations by Arthur Rackham, many are full page. This book was originally issued with an extra laid-in plate, this is not present in this copy. Profusely illustrated and decorated. The English Handmade paper is a thick textured type, almost cardstock, similar to Arches or Fabriano. Folio size. The book is bound in gray-taupe cloth with gilt-stamped spine and gilt-stamped vignette inset on the cover, decorated free end papers, top edge gilt, others uncut ( two edges intentioanlly left rough-cut).With a taupe slipcase, which is probably later and is in mint condition. Book condition: An excellent copy. The exterior, Very Good+ ( would be FINE if not for slight bumping to corners, slightly at the top, more so on lower corners.). Otherwise, excellent, no marks or soiling, top edge bright, tight binding. Book in unread condition - internally, FINE . Typical light transferring to free end papers ( ..present on all of Arthur Rackham illustrated signed editions published by Hodder and Stoughton, Constable and Co., Heinemann and Co.,), due to the glue which was used on the boards, which eventually darkens the front pastedown and transfers to first free blank. Small blank name-plate in top right corner of free end paper. Other than this - no issues at all! Wonderful copy. No foxing or staining, unread condition, pages white and clean and bright. ALL PLATES FINE (....This is an important comment to make on this book, as The Little Brother Little Sister Signed Edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham is frequently found with creased or missing plates....) The below is an exceptionally lovely bright copy in unread condition. Good luck bidding! Enjoy your win!
