Description
Beautiful three-volume hard-cover edition catalog in sturdy slipcase. This auction is for a new, sealed set. (Photos are from an already opened soft cover set). Auction of the property of Greentree Foundation, from the collection of Mr. & Mrs. John Hay Whitney. Many of the pictures are foldouts. Almost all are in color. The painting on the cover of this catalogue is the most expensive painting ever sold at auction at that time. Picasso painted it when he was 24. The 1905 masterpiece by Pablo Picasso sold for $104m (£58m), becoming the world's most expensive painting. ‘Garcon a la Pipe’ - or ‘Boy with a Pipe’ - was sold to an anonymous bidder at Sotheby's in New York. The sale beat the $82.5m (£46m) paid for Vincent Van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Gachet, sold in 1990. Volume 1: Impressionist & Modern Art, New York, May 5, 2004. 157 pages. Volume 2: Fine & Decorative Works of Art, New York, May 18, 2004. 139 pages. Volume 3: American Painting and Watercolors, New York, May 19, 2004. 63 pages. Free Media rate shipping in the US.
