Description
"Hackney Wick" – Special Limited Edition with SIGNED and NUMBERED Print Photography by Stephen Gill Nobody Books, in association with the Archive of Modern Conflict, London, 2005 Special Limited Edition, Signed, With Signed Print and Poster, Scarce Stephen Gill is an emerging British talent receiving glowing praise from such luminaries as Martin Parr, Jon Ronson, and Iain Sinclair. The photographer discovered the neighborhood and markets of Hackney Wick while working on another project. From the Artist: “That day I bought a plastic camera at the market for 50p; it had a plastic lens with no focus or exposure controls. I started making pictures with it at once. Over the next two years I visited Hackney Wick again and again. Hackney has long provided a refuge for immigrants and asylum seekers from all over the world and for me Hackney Wick especially reflects the great diversity of London.” From Parr and Badger, "The History of the Photobook, Volume II": “The book is a thoroughly affectionate look at the area, helped by the camera’s propensity for soft focus halation, yet Gill makes it clear that his pictures show generally marginalized lives, and people with a precarious foothold in British society. He also demonstrates that these are the people who have defined this area and made it a place that might even be mourned as it makes way for the sanitized modernism of the Olympic site [for the 2012 games].” Hackney Wick is a hardcover book with blue, silk-covered boards featuring pictorial illustration and titles stamped in silver on the cover and spine. The book measures 8.5 x 8.5 inches and contains 116 color plates in 126 pages, with a 24-page booklet of photo collages bound into the book. This special edition is limited to a printing of 100 copies, signed and numbered by Gill on the inside front cover (#95/100). A 34 x 23 inch poster of one of the collages is folded and laid into the book. Also included is a signed and dated c-print, measuring 8.25 x 6.25 inches, with a 7 x 5.25 inch image, enclosed within an envelope. The entirety is protected by a cardboard slipcase handmade from materials obtained at Hackney Wick. Top Choice Books offers an NEW copy of this truly special edition, an homage to a part of British culture overtaken by modernity.
