Alexander Hamilton, who spent his time there from the year 1688 to 1723, trading and travelling, by sea and land, to most of the countries and islands of commerce and navigation, between the cape of Goodhope, and the island of Japon." "A general account of the ports of the sea-coasts of Africa and Asia, from the Cape of Good Hope to China, together with the Malay Archipelago and Japan; ostensibly his sole object was to give information, derived from his own experiences, which would be of service both to merchants and to mariners." Hamilton, a Scottish sea captain, "followed a life of commercial adventure, sometimes as the captain of a ship, sometimes as supercargo, sometimes in a ship of his own, or in a ship of one of the rival companies. He visited almost every port, from Jeddah in the Red Sea to Amoy in China". In his narrative, he relates the principal events that happened during his residence in those parts, and also remarks on related occurrences, revolutions, and other curious and interesting particulars relating to commerce and affairs of the East India Company. This is the first edition of 1727. It is ex-library (UC Berkeley) and lacks 3 folding maps, but is otherwise complete. The remaining maps are: A General Mapp of the Sea Coasts of Africa from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Guardafoy with the Inhabited Islands in those seas; A Mapp of the Sea Coast of Persia from Boserah to the River Indus; A General Map of India Intra Ganges; A Map of the Dominions of Johore and of the Island of Sumatra with the Adjacent Islands; A Map of the Sea Coasts of Siam, Cambodia, Couchin China and Tonquin with the Islands to the East ward of them as far as Luconia. One map is loose but otherwise both maps and plates are in very good condition.
