CONTACT ME DIRECT AT COLOMBOBOOKS@GMAIL FOR MORE INFO ...OR PHOTOS Hi; My name is David Damario from Canada. Over the last two years I was fortunate enough to know Sir Arthur C. Clarke. I did not know him as well as many people around him but we did chat by e mail and snail mail over the last few years. I do not wish to imply that I knew him better than the people around him or members of the ACC Foundation. But he had an amazing sense of the world and I miss him very much as do many others. I went to Sri Lanka after his death and the country was in mourning for this Great man. I wish I had known him better and it was an honour to know him at all. Appraisal ID: 176512 Appraised On: 14-11-2008 Title: INTERPLANETARY FLIGHT Date/Era/Period: 1950 Description: Clarke, Arthur C. INTERPLANETARY FLIGHT An Introduction to Astronautics. Temple Press:London, (1964). First Edition. Illustrated with 16 plates. Signed by the Author on the title-page. With the bookplate of Arthur C. Clarke. Octavo, 164 pages, Very good in very good dust jacket (some tears, some discoloration). Condition: USED...HAS SOME TEARS AND DISCOLOUR Origin: Received direct when I went to ri Lanka Provenance: It was owned by Sir Arthur C. Clarke Appraised By: Thomas Joyce History Of The Item: Arthur C. Clarke is one of the great minds in science fiction, science fact, and astronautics. He was an earthling, but also a citizen of the universe -at least in his mind. His recent death marked a transition, not a finality. This is the first book published for Clarke. Appraiser Tips: DUST JACKETS on books are protective paper devices put on to both identify the book quickly, and to offer some slight protection from wear and scratches to the covers.Dust jackets with printing or decoration on them are said to go back as least as early as 1811, but they were not really widely used until late in the 19th century, and are not generally expected to be on a collectible book until 1930, or possibly 1920.The presence of a fine dust jacket on certain modern first editions is essential to get a premium price for the title, and might raise the price on a non-dust jacketed copy by 10 or a hundred times. A modern book which was published with a dust jacket, but which no longer has a dust jacket, is nearly unsellable.Mad but true: some people would rather buy the dust jacket that the book for certain rare modern first editions. A modern first edition book (which was published with a dust jacket) which no longer has the dust jacket, is just a used book. IN THIS INSTANCE, you should get a quality dust jacket protector to conserve the value of the jacket. Research Sources: Bookseller's catalogues. The Internet. AMERICAN BOOK PRICES CURRENT (book auction prices). Thirty-plus years as a professional rare book seller, Appraiser Comments: Arthur C. Clarke is a challenge of consistency. Sometimes he wrote his name in full, sometimes as Att C. Clarke, sometimes he crosses two ts, or, as in your example, only one of the ts. As with most authors, and most people, signatures do change with age and well-being. Clarke's personal copy of his first book is an enviable, desirable curio to have. I hope that you have the purchase slip from his home where you bought it. It would be imporatant for the provenance of this copy. There is, of course, no positive guarantee that he had only one copy of INTEPLANETARY in his collection. He easily may have had multiples -or even a carton, which he held onto for a lifetime. who can be sre, but i have not found another copy which can be traced back to Clarke himself. That is good. I believe that the signature is authentic, and that the bookplate is authentic too. This is not one of Clarke's sexier titles (such as 2001, or Prelude), but it is his first book and an influential book of science which did have impact on the subsequent efforts to explore outer space. I think two thousand dollars is an aggressive evaluation for this (especially in these troubled economic times). Fifteen hundred is a more likely price tag. Decent signed copies of this are as inexpensive at $750, but they do not carry Clarke's bookplate with them, as this one does. * Current Fair Market Value: $1,000.00 ** Replacement Cost: $2,000.00 All values are in US currency This online appraisal is an expert's opinion of the item(s) depicted above based solely on images and information supplied by our customer.
