Description
A very rare and very interesting, very readable book! Happy bidding, happy reading! BOOK: THE CHRONOLOGY OF ANCIENT KINGDOMS AMENDED, by SIR ISAAC NEWTON. This is the first edition of 1728, published in London: Tonson, Osborn, and Longman. Superb, very expensive modern antique style tooled leather over marbled boards, gilt spine labels, matching marbled end papers. This interesting, fantastical and imaginative work is fascinating as Isaac Newton entertwines factual and mythical historical events, includes literary events and other culturally significant and interesting or curious events in this most original and fascinating book, a cultural history account rather than a pure factual or purely historical account, endeavoring to make historical dates "suit with the course of Nature, with Astronomy, with Sacred History, with Herodotus, and with itself." Very readable still today, even though originally issued in 1728! A most fascinating and amazingly original work as could only be expected from one of the greatest minds... Six chapters attend to Greece, Egypt, Assyria, Babylonian and Mede Empires, Persia, and a description of the Temple of Solomon. The three folding plates are present. BOOK CONDITION: Externally, fine. Beautiful high quality modern binding in antique style, fine tooled leather with gilt labels over Florentine Marbled paper boards, matching Florentine Marbled paper end papers and new laid paper free blanks. The binding originally cost £500 to commission. Internally, excellent for age. Pages browned and spotted commensurate with age approaching 300 years. Small handwritten owner's name in beautiful 18th or early 19th Century handwriting, near top right corner. Another similar early name in light brown ink near top right corner of dedication. The title page is slightly frayed at edge. ( The dedication is to Caroline, consort of George 2nd, from the very light pencil inscription on dedication leaf. No other pencil inscriptions. ) The text and the folding plates are on high quality laid paper - the book is a pleasure to handle. A beautiful, lavishly bound copy without detracting marks. Good luck and enjoy your win! This volume would make a superb gift! SHIPPING: We are happy to ship worldwide and to combine shipping on multiple purchases.
