The water is warm too, for it hasslipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. On one side of the river the golden foothill slopes curveup to the strong and rocky Gabilan mountains, but on the valley side the water is lined with trees--willows fresh and green with every spring, carrying in their lower leaf junctures the debris of the winter's flooding..."              STEINBECK, John. Of Mice and Men. Covici Friede: New York, 1937. Pp. 186, 8vo, original tan cloth stamped in terra cotta and ruled in black, original dust jacket.    First edition, first printing, first issue binding and text with presumed first state dust jacket.    First issue text with “pendula” on page nine, the period between the eights on page 88, “In Dubious Battle” as the author's last credited title, and the printer listed as J.J. Little and Ives Company. First issue binding stamped on front and spine in terracotta color as opposed to brown in later issues. Likely first state dust jacket with the last sentence of the second paragraph on the rear flap reading “simple mind is not able”, and most importantly with the “g” in the word “belong” on the second sentence of the Harry Hansen blurb on the rear panel remaining unbroken-- however price clipped.        This tragic-yet captivating story is set during the depression era in California, with two ranch workers in desparate need of work. The tragic story of which Steinbeck has penned, vividly portrays the failed economy of the United States and captures the essence of migrant work during a time struggle. This novel served as the basis for the more memorable film adaptation in 1992, which starred John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. Easily one of the most desirable titles written by Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men is exceedingly scarce as the first state with all points as called for, and consequently serves as a seminal work to be obtained; this is evidently shown whenever one is offered on the open market, due to the constraints of availability.          1 of only 2500 copies of the true first edition, first issue, printed.        Due to the abuse of few, our return policy is now changed for all. Returns will only be accepted within 10 days of sale if the item is misrepresented. Choosing not to read the description, choosing not to look at the photographs, or simple regret etc are not grounds for return.
