KA KA BAIBALA HEMOLELE O KE KAUOHA KAHIKO A ME KE KAUOHA HOU; I Unuhiia Mailoko Mai O Na Olelo Kahiko, A Hooponopono Hou ia. NU YOKA. UA PAIIA NO KO AMERIKA POE HOOLAHA BAIBALA, I HOOKUMUIA I KA MAKAHIKI MDCCCXVI 1884 Hardbound in fine restored condition, approximately 1540 pages includes both Old and New Testaments plus colored map, measures approximately 4 ¾" x 6 ¾", no dust jacket. The boards are covered in blind stamped black morocco. This Baibala has been completely restored by an expert bookbinder on the mainland. The morocco was removed and rebacked with a beautiful result. The interior is clean and tightly bound. The contents have been completely secured, there are no loose or missing pages and I find no previous owner names or notations, no marks, creases or tears. Overall modest age toning is noted, but no foxing. The page edges have a fine marbled print design and there are a few small spots that appear to have superfitial nibbling but this is very limited does not penetrate into the pages to any extent. This very early Baibala, is documented in the Hawaiian National Bibliography 1780-1900, Compiled and Annotated by David W. Forbes, University of Hawai’i Press, Honolulu, Copyright 2003, Volume 4, 1881-1900 Page 125, Reference 3643, as follows: Rarely is a BAIBALA HEMOLELE from the 1800s found in such remarkable condition. Perhaps because the Hawaiian population since the 1800s has spoken primarily English, the Bible written in Hawaiian was viewed more as a novelty than necessity, thus the printings were limited and seldom. In recent years however, interest in Hawaiian as an actively spoken and written language has increased making acquisition of a complete edition the goal of many students and collectors. This particular copy would easily be a prize addition to any Pacific Isle library.
