Description
Book Description: Nuerenberg 1810, 1810. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Nuerenberg 1810 Vom Verfasser der unterhaltenden Erzählungen für das erste Kindesalter. Small 12mo. Cardboard Binding. 24 engraved illustrations, all coloured in a contemporary hand. Most likely by Chodowiecki. Each engraving (ca. 70 x 30 mm) is mounted on a leaf of laid paper. 192pp. Very rare work teaching geography to children in the form of short stories on the customs and costumes of the various peoples of the world.Author used his own children as an example. It presents 24 nations and/or peoples throughout the world, a chapter dedicated to each of them: 2 chapters cover Africa, describing the people of the ''Hottentoten'' and the inhabitants of Guinea. The next 7 chapters are dedicated to the Americas (North, South and the West Indies) describing the ''Caribbeans'', the ''Floridans'', the ''Mexicans'', the ''Eskimos'', the ''Greenlanders'', the ''Patagonians'' and the ''Pescherans''. Then 2 chapters on Oceania follow, describing 2 Australian nations, the ''New Zealanders'' and the ''New Hollanders'' better known as the Aboriginals. Hereafter come 8 chapters describing nations and people in Asia: Java, Amboina & Makassar, the Moguls, the Bucharans, the Chinese, the Kalmyk, the Mongols and the Buryatians. The last 5 chapters are dedicated to 4 Syberian nations, Tungus, Kamchatka, Ostiaka and the Samoyed and finally the northern European nation Lapland. Each nation is illustrated with a beautiful engraving, depicting an inhabitant of that region, finely and contemporarily coloured by hand.In his preface the author states that he has used the engravings which had been published before by prof. Stoy at Nuremberg in the Neue Bildersammlung für die Jugend, depicting the various nations of the world. The rights to publish these engravings had been acquired by his "Freund B***" who had asked him -the author of the present work- to write an explanatory text to each of these plates. Beautiful copy. There are some small pencil marks in the book which I will not attempt to erase although easily done, this would indicate that a child had access to the book, nothing serious however and it adds to the charm of this extremely rare book - could not find any reference anywhere. This volume would certainly lend itself to a major acquisition of a major library. The engravings are charming - works of art in themselves
