Life Boats, Report of the Committee [subscribed by J. W., I. Watts, and others] appointed to examine the Life-Boat Models submitted to compete for the Premium offered by His Grace the Duke of Northumberland., To which is added, a list of all the existing life-boat, rocket, and mortar stations, and an abstract of the wrecks which occurred on the shores of the British Isles in 1850. Publisher"s blue cloth, embossed and gilt. Wear as shown in photos, (no fep) maps and prints intact, laid in is an original hand scribed nautical note written by R. B.Forbes (verified at the Massachusetts Historical Society) (see photo), and on ffep, signed on behalf of the Duke of Northumberland by Chairman of the Royal National Life Boat Institution, Thomas Baring Esquire April 29th 1857 as presented to R. B. Forbes Esquire, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (which was established in 1786 to rescue the survivors of shipwrecks and ships in distress. The Society maintained lifeboats and rescue stations along the Massachusetts seashore and provided instruction in lifesaving. It is widely considered the precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard. The Society later expanded its efforts, supporting the Asylum for the Insane and the Boston Lying-In Hospital, and rewarding individuals for heroic personal rescues with medals and monetary awards.
