Description
LORD OF THE RINGS J.R.R.Tolkien 2nd Rev.Ed/1st Im HBDJ LORD OF THE RING Comprising of: Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, The Return of the King J.R.R.TOLKIEN George Allen and Unwin, London, 1966 All three volumes in very good plus/near fine condition. The red boards are unfaded and the gilt on spines is bright. There is no foxing nor any inscriptions in the books and the pages are white. The maps in rear of books remain clean and untorn; the map in The Two Towers has become detached but has no tears or damage. The jackets are in near fine condition with no tears or chips and are now in new clear protective sleeves. The first edition text remained unrevised and unchanged for nearly a decade after numerous reprintings. When Tolkien revised the text in 1965, he noted the new errors introduced by Jarrolds, his editor. Tolkien was re-editing because in that year, Ace Books in the United States published an unauthorised edition...but this is another rather long story for another time. Through 1966, Tolkien continued to revise the text: these revisions were mostly revisions to names and attempts to make them consistent. He was too late to get these changes incorporated in the USUSUS second edition, but they were included in the second impression of the Allen and Unwin second edition in 1967.USUSUS second edition, but they were included in the second impression of the Allen and Unwin second edition in 1967. After Tolkien's death in 1973, Christopher, Tolkien's son and literary executor, contined the work of corrections, and sent a large set to Allen and Unwin which were included in the three-volume hardcover edition of 1974.
