This volume, first published in 1853 and quite scarce in the original, is a collection of his writings (including his poetry and essyas and descriptions) presented as a biography, with narrative and commentary by his intimate friend Louis Noble. In this edition, Elliot Vesell provides a sketch of Cole's life, an interpretation of his work and a discussion of the Hudson River School of artists.
