Description
THE MATHEMATICAL PRINCIPLES OF NATURAL PHILOSOPHY by Sir Isaac Newton. Benjamin Motte, London, 1729. Recent fine period style binding in full marbled calf and gilt decoration. Very Rare First Edition in English of the Principia, based on the 1726 Pemberton edition of the Latin text and dedicated to Sir Hans Sloane as President of the Royal Society. The translator Andrew Motte was the son of the printer Benjamin Motte and very briefly a lecturer on geometry at Gresham College. Also included is Machin's attempt to rectify Newton's lunar theory. Machin was on the Royal Society's committee set up to adjudicate the priority dispute between Newton and Leibnitz over the invention of the calculus, which vindicated Newton, and one of the editors of the resulting Commercium epistolicum. He was professor of astronomy at Gresham College from 1713 until his death. 8vo. 2 volumes. Frontispiece in volume one is a perfect facsimile on period paper - looks like it belongs. Otherwise all original and complete. Bound at rear of volume 2 is John Machin's "The Laws of the Moon's Motion According to Gravity". Preceding the Machin title is a 13 page index and an 8 page appendix. The title page in volume 1 had some minor paper loss along lower and inner edge (not affecting text) which has been expertly repaired. Also a small tear at inner edge not affecting text. 47 folding plates, 2 folding tables, tables within text, head and tail pieces and decorative initials and vignettes all present as called for. Very Good condition. Some mild foxing/browning of the dedication otherwise this is a clean and tight set. Errata follows the 71 page treatise on the Moon's Motion. Page 258 of vol 2 has been miss-numbered to be 289, but catch words are correct. The same for page 69 of Machin treatise, which is numbered 99, but catch words are correct. Another copy is listed on the internet at over $42,000. Better investment than the stock market!
