Description
Medical Horrors Jan 1932, #1     This pulp legitimately fits into the “RARE” category so often over-used on eBay and elsewhere. Actually we will call it BLOOD-RARE with no shame at all. To bring you up to speed on this title I shall quote from Pulpwood Editor by Harold Hersey, the man who published Medical Horrors…   “A friend of mine had ached to take a crack at medical frauds and malpractice. He said he would finance a publication that hotfooted it after quackery and chicanery among doctors if I would supervise its publications. I was to have a share of the profits as a reward for my labors. I formed a company separate and distinct from those associated with the fifty-odd magazines I was publishing or distributing at the time, taking care to keep my name off the indicia on the contents page. I was so effective in hiding my identity that it took almost twenty-four hours for the entire trade to learn my secret!...”   “The earliest verified reports convinced us that Medical Horrors was an instantaneous success…No one knew better than I did that drugstores constituted a large percentage of the retail outlets for magazines, especially in smaller towns where the druggist uses his fully returnable magazines as a constantly changing library for his customers. I could not afford to lose these outlets. Once the manufacturers pass the word along the line that I was responsible for Medical Horrors and my goose was cooked.”   Not wanting to bite the hands that fed him, Hersey pulled the plug on the title after just one issue was published to prevent a major backlash from the drug stores that he distributed pulps and other products to.   The copy offered here is the same one that was sold on eBay a couple of years or so ago, hence it is the only copy that I personally know of offered on eBay or anywhere else for that matter in at least 5 or 6 years or more. I bought this copy and placed it in my own collection. I consider my collection a “Moveable feast” to paraphrase Hemmingway. Always in motion, changing, issues coming out to be offered for sale and  issues going in to rest here for a while before they may once again be made available some time down the road. This way I own the collection…the collection does not own me: obsession is generally kept at bay.   This copy is a strong conservatively graded very good with a near fine appearance. What brings it down is a 2.5 inch spine split at the foot of the spine and a smudge mark on the nurses left arm. I am not sure if this smudge was a printing error or made after market by a previous owner. Over-all it is a tight sound copy with nice paper quality. A near full 99% spine with strong lettering and nice back cover. Additional scans will be made available upon request. Rest assured if you end up owning it you will have a pulp almost as rare as the first Tarzan. In fact I personally have seen more first Tarzans offered for sale then I have this one. I have even owned more Thrill Books then Medical Horrors!     PAYMENT - We welcome your checks and money orders and also accept Visa and Master Card through our own banking system.
