Description
Menschlich (Humanity) – Near PRISTINE Condition Compilation by Christian Boltanski   Thouet Verlag and Walther König, Köln, 1994     From Parr and Badger, The History of the Photobook, volume II: “Christian Boltanski is a French artist whose work has an intensely political dimension, whether in his sculptures, installations, or photobooks. Like many artists interested in the socio-political power of the photograph, he is drawn to private snapshots. These types of photograph are made for one primary reason: to tell the sitter that he or she exists. But a close relation of the snapshot is the identification portrait, which tells the state that the sitter exists. Between the snapshot and the identification portrait, behind the surfaces of the anonymous faces depicted lie the stories of individual lives, within the bosoms of their families and under the scrutiny of the state. Boltanski uses such photographs as a memorializing agent, to make a record of an individual life, . . . His photobook masterpiece is probably Kaddish (1998),… a compilation of several of his previous projects—which include the artist’s books Menschlich (Humanity), Sachlich (Materiality), Örtlich (Locality) and Sterblich (Mortality)… the summation of the various photobooks Boltanski has made on his main subject: the Holocaust – hundreds of pages of blurred photographs of individuals bearing mute but eloquent testimony to this immense crime against them.”   Menschlich is a softcover volume with stiff pictorial wrappers, measuring 10.5 x 8.25 inches and containing 1,300 full-page, black-and-white reproductions on onion-skin-like paper. Top Choice Books offers a copy of this masterful document and art piece by Boltanski in AS NEW condition. Very SCARCE to find this book is such nearly pristine condition - almost like having been stored in a time capsule. Beautiful example of this very fine (and fragile) work.....   PAYMENT DETAILS   Please use the shipping calculator to determine your shipping costs for US addresses   International shipping is available   I will only accept PayPal, personal checks, and money orders (bank, post office).  Payment MUST be received within three business days of the purchase, or the item will be re-listed unless other arrangements have been approved.
