Description
This fascinating historical catalogue, published by New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1959, documents the museum's acquisitions of paintings and sculptures from January 1, 1958 through December 31, 1958.  It includes a complete list of acquisitions and 47 illustrations in black and white.  Perhaps the most famous works acquired that year were three paintings by 28-year-old Jasper Johns, Target With Four Faces, Green Target, and White Numbers, all of which are very well known to contemporary visitors to MOMA.  Among the other great masterpieces acquired during that short year were major works by Alberto Giacometti, Maurice de Vlaminck, Wassily Kandinsky, Gwen John, Sir Jacob Epstein, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Jackson Pollock, Emilio Vedova, Adolph Gottlieb, Larry Rivers, Renato Guttuso, John Hultberg, Manolo Millares, Sidney Nolan, Victor Vasarely, Jean Atlan, and Louise Nevelson.   The 24-page softcover volume measures 10 x 7½ inches.  The cover shows some notable wear, but the interior pages are fresh and in good condition.
