Description
MY TAHITI by ROBERT DEAN FRISBIE With illustrations by W. ALISTER MACDONALD BOSTON LITTLE BROWN AND COMPANY 1937 Copyright 1924, 1931, 1935, 1937 by Robert Dean Frisbie This is a Stated FIRST EDITION Published September 1937 Hardbound in Near Fine condition with Dust Jacket, 277 pages includes a FRONTISPIECE, PREFACE, List of THE CHARACTERS OF THE BOOK, CONTENTS, ILLUSTRATIONS (12 total), and a GLOSSARY OF TAHITIAN WORDS, measures approximately 5 ¾" x 8 ½". The jacket displays a tropical scene of perhaps the Frisbies themselves. At nearly 70 years age it is in remarkable condition. Slight rubbing is noted, a couple short closed edge tears and a few minor chips but the jacket remains bright, unfaded with price intact. This book when available, which is rare, is more often than not, found without dust jacket. It has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket cover to help protect its lovely condition. The boards are covered in green cloth with titles blind stamped in dark green on the spine and cover. They are clean with a slight bit of fading to the ends of spine and edges. There is a significant bump to the upper front free corner but hardly any edge wear to speak of. It is straight and unusually bright. The interior reveals clean, tight contents with hinges completely intact. There is a brief but extravagantly sized dedication on the fly page. Age toning is very modest with no foxing. There are no previous ownership indications, no marks, creases or tears. PREFACE "During twelve years of wandering among the atolls of the South Seas I have attempted, at odd moments, to re-create from memory fragmentary passages from my life in a Tahitian village. It has been a pleasant task – redeeming from oblivion of the last of a Golden Age." "These passages, sketches, incidents, are an attempt to recapture something of the spirit of native Tahitian life as I knew it during the first three years of the nineteen-twenties. The same life may be in existence to-day in few a of the out-of-the-way-corners of Tahiti; but for me it came to an abrupt end one stormy night of the hurricane season. All this I have explained in the pages that follow; here I am only concerned with telling that I have written these sketches as though describing a people whose culture is already a thing of the past." "A little of the following Material has appeared, at odd intervals, in the ATLANTIC MONTHLY, FORUM, and AMERICAN MERCURY; and I have taken the liberty to consult Teuira Henry’s ANCIENT TAHITI to assure accuracy in the text of some of the old chants and songs." - R.D.F. Puka-Puka, April 1935. Rich in descriptions of the Tahiti of the 1920s, Robert Dean Frisbie lived that which most only dreamed and in fact achieved much of his own dream , that of writing a novel of the south seas. Although much of his work was credited to his own life experiences, his superb writing flare undeniably graces the telling of his tales. Most widely known for The Book of Puka-Puka copyright in 1929 and reprinted numerous times both in the USA and UK through today. MY TAHITI copyright 1937 was not published in the great numbers of Puka-Puka, possibly due to the impact of WWII. Today, it is one of the most prized and sought after Frisbie books, rarely appearing on the market. This copy, in exceptional condition in its rarely found Dust Jacket truly a treasure.
