An interesting idea for a work, this book looks at how geography is a factor in war, looking at the strengths and weaknesses of France and several other European states in terms of their landscape, and natural defences, and how this has been demonstrated in past military history. The volumes of text are backed up with a wealth of international and regional maps of Europe. The various volumes comprise: 2 volumes from the 1885 edition. The first of these volumes covers general concepts of geography as an introduction, and general notes on Europe, its races, religions, and nations. This is followed by an in-depth look at France itself, covering each region of the country and assessing its geographical features through military history. It includes sections on Alsace Lorraine, the border with Germany, the Rhone Valley, the Jura, Savoie, the Alps, and the Pyrenees, drawing on examples primarily from the campaigns of Napoleon and the French republic from the late 18th century onwards, but also touching on more contemporary history in the Franco-Prussian War. The second of these volumes continues with France, looking at the coastlines, then providing an analysis of Algeria (in-depth), plus a chapter on Tunisia, and a closing chapter on other French colonies (Senegal, Cambodia, Madagascar, New Caledonia, the Antilles, Martinique, and so on). The third text volume (from the 1881 edition) is two bound into one, and follows a familiar pattern to the French volumes. They cover the 'smaller' states of Europe - Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark - followed by the larger states - Germany, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Italy. So far as we can tell, it is missing the last volume, on the Balkans, Russia, central Asia and Great Britain. The atlas volumes are again split in two. The first volume (from 1885) is entirely on France and her borders and includes geological and coastal maps, close-up regional maps of French forts on her borders, plus additional maps of the French colonies. The second volume (from 1881) covers the rest of Europe, and obviously accompanies the text on these nations (including those missing from this set), with national and regional maps, close-ups of major cities, and even the English colonies (on a double-page world map). These atlases are in impressive condition, with a wealth of colour maps, many double-page, and some excellent detail in the smaller regional maps. We cannot find any set as comprehensive as this (we cannot find any with comparable atlas volumes at all), despite it missing the last volume. This is an impressive work, of great scope, and of lasting interest to any military historian or geographer.   key words: On 12-Dec-07 at 04:51:17 GMT, seller added the following information: Powered by eBay Turbo Lister
