Mc Clelland BARCLAY Cattails METAL Bookends c.1930s Famous Illustrator WWII McClelland Barclay Art Company Start Price USD 249.00 Current Price USD 249.00 Time Left - Bid Count 0 Buy It Now Price - Reserve Price - Start Time Monday, November 17, 2008 End Time Monday, November 24, 2008 Location Michigan See more about 'Mc Clelland BARCLAY Cattails METAL Bookends c.1930s ' Description I am offering a wonderful pair of  Mc Clelland Barclay bookends featuring Cattails, circa 1930s.  McClelland Barclay was born in 1891 in St Louis.  Barclay was known for his sultry red-headed women illustrations. He was also a nationally acclaimed painter, sculptor and jewelry designer.   He achieved national prominence at the early age of 21 when his art work graced the covers of Saturday Evening Post and Ladies' Home Journal.  His work was used in many national ad campaigns, such as GM's "Body by Fisher" ads. He formed his own company, McClelland Barclay Art Company,  and in the 1930s also began producing art metal objects, such as these bookends.  Barclay also achieved prominence in the U.S. Navy as a LCDR in the Naval Reserve and illustrated many recruiting posters used by the Navy in WWII.   LCDR Barclay was aboard LST-342 in the Pacific when his ship was struck by a Jap sub on July 18,1943 and he was subsquently killed in action at sea. Each McClelland Cattail bookend is approx. 4.5" tall, 3.5" wide, and 3.25"deep.  Nice weighted pair, weighing approx. 6.5 pounds per pair.  Original finish over gray metal.  Very good used condition for their ages with age and use appropriate surface wear.  Nothing detracting.  Highly presentable.  Please view pictures.  Pictures are part of the Description.  For better picture viewing results click Supersize and then Maximize picture. Real charmers.
